simple to complex India

Remember the time when buying a car meant picking a budget and buying the one car that suited that budget? Am talking about the days when the options to buy a car were very few. Am talking about the mid to late 1980s. I still remember the options people had. If they had a small budget, maruti 800 was their only choice. A bigger budget and may be a premier padmini. A slightly higher budget and you had the options of choosing a wide range of colourful Ambassadors :)
Anything above that, you had to import that car. Ahhh, Life was so simple!

These days, buying a car is like going on a head spinning amusement park ride! you think of buying a car and the chances of going mad are more likely than ending up with a car you completely like. Don't get me wrong, having options is great. In fact, the influx of quality cars in India is steadily on the rise, but what happened to all the simplicity? If choosing a car has become so complex, can't imagine how many simple things in life have become complicated!

Complexity is more related with the mindset i guess. If you are clear about what you want or what we like, then there is not going to be much complexity how much ever options we have..

When the market is good, more manufacturers come to sell their products and everyone increases the variety of their offerings to compete with their rivals.

As far as buyers are concerned, options is good, for among oter things
1.Monopoly would result in taking the people for a ride, what is the incentive for the manufacturer to reduce the cost or improve the quality when he can anyways make his profit.
competition and options = more value for money.

2.A lot of people would get cars uniquely suited to their spl needs.
I can never sit in a 800 or padmini and I dont find ambassador comfortable, and i can definitely afford more.

3.Weeding through even 20 options in a articular segment/budget is not going to be tough for anyone.

Back when we were kids there used to be action and power shoes. lifebuoy,Cinthol,Hamam and Pears for soap.Clinic plus and sunsilk for shampoos.Colgate, closeup and cibaca for toothpaste.
Scooter na chetak lambretta or vespa.

Kaalam maari pochu.
The change in the options is not restricted to any particular product, it is more of an indicator of the the big consumer market that India has turned into.

As the great Joe Fox once said, umm, well I don't remember what he said. But yeah, it had to do with decisions, how you make them, and how starbucks helps you become a good decision maker.
